The Class Placement Process is a highly involved approach to assigning students to classes. There are already a large number of demands on placements, so it is important that as a staff we adhere to the process and have a unified voice when speaking to the parent community. It is imperative that we are all mindful of the big picture: the placement of over 780 students.

It can be difficult coming up with the right words when you have an established relationship with a parent. Therefore, the Class Placement Committee would like to assist you by providing some support when you find yourself in this position.

When responding to a parent email request, please use the following passage:

Thank you for your email concerning your child’s class placement for next year. Class placement at NIST is a thoughtful, technical and comprehensive approach as we understand how important it is to students, parents and staff.

Our highest priorities are:

  • to ensure that we have balanced, high functioning classes
  • that the social and academic needs of all students are considered.

To achieve this we use data to drive our decisions. As a school we collect data from a number of assessments throughout the year. In addition, we collect information from the students through the ‘sociograms’ which looks at the students’ friendships and emotional needs. We also consider the feedback that has been received from the parent survey. All of this, when combined with the teachers knowledge of the students, ensures that we are able to meet the needs of all students. At the end of this process the School will place over 780 students.

Class placements will be finalised once all new students have been placed and you will be informed in August of your child’s class for the new academic year.

When responding to parents in person:

The Class Placement Team follows a process that takes into account my views, the data that we collect throughout the year, information collected from the students through ‘sociograms’ and feedback from the parent survey.

Class placements will be finalised once all new students have been placed and you will be informed in August of your child’s class for the new academic year.
